Climbing with Yosemite Mountaineering School's Girls on Granite

Now there are even more options for women who are looking for adventure on the rocks. Those with no previous climbing experience can join our beginner group, while those ready to take the next step are welcome in our intermediate course. Or, sign up for one of our back-to-back sessions and do both at once.

The Yosemite Valley Climbing Plan

Drive into Yosemite, relax and make yourself comfortable in a Curry Village tent cabin. Shared lodging gives you a chance to get a jump start on meeting the fantastic women that you'll be climbing and hiking with during the program.

In the morning, it is a short walk from your tent cabin to the Yosemite Mountaineering School offices, located next to the Curry Village store and just inside the Mountain Shop.  Meet your awesome female guides and gather climbing equipment between 8:30 and 9:00 am. Then you’re off to the rocks.  Drive, bike or shuttle to a section of cliff called Swan Slab, across from Yosemite Lodge, which has a large number of climbs of varying difficulty. (If you've signed up for a session that is back to back with another session, the scheduling may be slightly different. Be sure to check with the Yosemite Mountaineering School for your exact schedule.)

Beginner
Learn the basics of climbing, the equipment, safety systems and climbing techniques and then Go Climb a Rock.  Help keep your climbing partners safe, and cheer them on.  With a maximum of 6 people per guide, you'll get plenty of personal attention. Spend the second day enjoying the Park on your own terms. You can take a guided hike and learn more about the cliffs of Yosemite and the people who climb them, or simply enjoy the view from the river's edge. It's up to you.

Intermediate
This is a great session for gym climbers who are looking to get outside. After a quick review of the basics, we'll get right into more advanced outdoor climbing techniques, and the pleasure of a good jam. You'll also get an introduction to placing climbing gear. Spend the day climbing, belaying and having a great time with new friends. On Day 2, practice and learn to build solid, and safe anchors with gear. Don’t worry, we will manage to get some climbing in too.

Advanced
Our advanced session is designed for women who already have experience placing gear, and are looking to increase their comfort on lead, and multi-pitch climbs. Day 1 is an introduction to lead climbing - including a discussion of strategies and techniques for efficient multi-pitch climbing and rappelling. Day 2 is all about self-rescue and aid climbing. Even if you aren't planning to climb a big wall just yet, the techniques you learn here can help you get yourself out of trouble on lead or on big routes, and give you confidence that you'll know what to do if something serious happens.

Lodging
Package pricing includes accommodations in a Curry Village Tent Cabin, shared with other Girls on Granite participants. If you would like private accommodations please let the agent know when you make your reservation. Upgrades to private accommodations at Curry Village or another DNC property are based on availability.

The Tuolumne Meadows Climbing Plan

Not too much different than the program in Yosemite Valley, but during the summer months, the higher elevations makes Tuolumne Meadows the cool place to hang out and we want to share that with you.

Enjoy your drive into Tuolumne Meadows and find your fellow climbers at the Tuolumne Meadows Campground. (Talk to Yosemite Mountaineering School about details on campsites.) Relax and enjoy the evening - there's plenty to see within walking distance of the campground.

The next morning it isn't far to a discounted breakfast at Tuolumne Meadows Lodge, or the Tuolumne Meadows Sport Shop. If you drove in from the West side, you passed the Sport Shop on your way to the campground - it's the building behind the gas station that has the cool gear in the window display. Your female guides will meet you there at 8:30am so that you can gather climbing equipment and get a quick orientation for the day.

Testimonials

“To surprise my family one year , I planned a vacation at Curry Village. At the time we thought we'd only stay a few days and then continue on to Disneyland. Our daughters at the time were 8 & 10. Coming through the tunnel that opens to the magnificent Yosemite vista...and a tour of the valley floor on our first day...they didn't want to be anywhere but Yosemite! We were able to extend our visit a couple of extra days so that we could enjoy more day hikes and "dream" of making our way to Half Dome! Sipping coffee in the morning in the open auditorium at Camp Curry is a memory I will always savor. We try to return as often as we can. This vacation was one of the most memorable for our family.
