Security, Fire & Life Safety

We, as members of the Security, Fire and Life Safety Department, of Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts at Yosemite, Inc., are committed to providing a safe environment for the diverse Yosemite community and park visitors. 

Specifically, our duty is to provide an organized force of trained personnel to protect the community from unlawful acts, fire, and unsafe conditions.  We shall respond to unlawful acts, which disturb the peace, or place in jeopardy individuals, the environment, or property.

We are committed to a community safety philosophy that is dependent upon partnerships with park visitors, residents, government agencies, employees, and park partners.   We nurture public trust by holding ourselves to the highest standards of performance and ethics. 

This shall be accomplished, in the highest professional manner, by providing educational input to employees and visitors, impartially enforcing both the law and Company regulations, respecting the rights of individuals and the environment, while embracing customer service as our cornerstone.

DNC Parks & Resorts at Yosemite, Inc., is the primary concessioner for the National Park Service in Yosemite National Park.  DNC offers guest recreation activities ranging from rock climbing and snow skiing, to trams and tours.  DNC operates 1,667 guest rooms ranging from rustic tent cabins to The Ahwahnee, 25 Food and Beverage units from seasonal ice cream stands to year-round gourmet dining.  The company also operates 19 retail locations including grocery and gift stores, service stations, and outdoor gear.  In addition to the guest facilities, the company operates a substantial number of support services such as business offices, warehouses, a large vehicle fleet, and employee housing.   

The Department is responsible for the security, fire and life safety protection of company and Yosemite National Park assets, guests and their belongings, along with employees and their personal property.  Officers respond to and investigate a wide variety of incidents including thefts, disturbances, traffic collisions, and natural disasters.  Crime prevention and customer service are also a priority.  Officers receive a wide range of training.  The Department enjoys an excellent working relationship with NPS Protection Rangers (both law enforcement and fire tasked).

The Department is responsible for managing approximately eighty intrusion alarms and nineteen fire alarm systems.  Security Officers are “first responders” to all alarms.  Alarm use, loss prevention, and fire prevention training sessions are offered to all company employees.  Approximately 1,000 fire extinguishers are maintained and managed.  Patrols are conducted on foot, a variety of vehicles, and bicycles.  Uniforms, uniform cleaning, and gear are provided. 

The Department manages the Lost and Found operation, which handles approximately 9,000 items a year.  A Cash Run (“armored car” service) is provided by the Department between company business units seven days a week.  Normal patrol routes are documented by electronic monitoring, with the data stored and analyzed for loss prevention needs.  Internal loss prevention audits, and package inspections are conducted on a random basis.  A successful shoplifter identification and detention program is regularly exercised in conjunction with a civil remedy program.  Discrete Executive/Celebrity protection is offered on an as-needed basis. 

Members of the Department provide emergency response to major incidents and disasters both “on property” and “off property” that impacts company operations.  Officers respond to approximately 13,000 calls for service each year.  Both internal employee investigations and criminal acts by the public against the company are investigated.  The Department initiates approximately 1,000 investigations each year.

DNC Firefighters are fully certified firefighters and fulltime employees in the company who respond with NPS Fire.  Employees are eligible to apply as a Firefighter after one year of service with the company.  Fire response is specialized in structure fire attack.  Many of the firefighters are cross-trained in wild-land fire fighting and are EMT certified.  

The structure of the Department includes an Assistant Manager of Field Operations, Assistant Manager of Support Services, and Fire Captain who report to the Chief of Security.  The Security, Fire and Life Safety Department consists of seventeen fulltime, year-round, employees.  Several seasonal positions are added during the summer.  Ten additional positions are allocated as part of the paid-call volunteer fire department.     

At any given time, we may be recruiting for the below described positions.  The Department is responsible for the security, fire and life safety protection of company and Yosemite National Park assets, guests and their belongings, along with employees and their personal property.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Security Officer I 
A seasonal position which is responsible for handling routine patrol of properties and employee housing, providing transport and assisting with emergency incidents. Primarily works the graveyard shift.

Security Officer II 
A year-round position and in addition to the duties of Security Officer I, will conduct investigations, may train officers, conducts cash transports, may open or secure facilities, monitors fire apparatus in all units, works special functions and acts as backup for night patrols.

Security Officer III 
In addition to Security Officer II responsibilities, may perform supervisory duties, trains officers, conducts surveillance.  May work any shift.

Security Officer IV 
In addition to Security Officer III responsibilities, acts as supervisor and manager in the absence of Security management, empowered to suspend associates for violation of policy.

Security Officer I (partial job description)

1. Pedestrian and mobile patrol of Company facilities and locations throughout Yosemite National Park.
2. Performs noise abatement within assigned areas.
3. Assists with wildlife management compliance within assigned areas.
4. Retains and forwards confidential or proprietary information in accordance with guidelines and training.
5. Reports on facilities and property found unsecured, and secures such facilities and property.
6. Assists park visitors and employees as needed.
7. Provides transport for guests and employees.
8. Provides cash escorts between Company facilities.
9. Assists the National Park Service with medical responses, traffic management, or other duties as directed.
10. Assists with fires, wind storms, floods, blizzards, evacuations, and other emergencies as directed.  If off-duty and not on call, checks in with Security management when aware of an incident or condition.
11. Attends and testifies at legal meetings, court proceedings and disciplinary meetings as required.
12. May work any shift, but primarily nights including graveyard shift. 
13. Performs other services as requested or required by management.

Security Officer II (partial job description)
In addition to performing the duties of a Security Office I, the Security Officer II has the primary responsibility to perform the following:

1. Conducts employee and applicant background investigations.
2. Utilizes surveillance and tips to generate cases.
3. Trains new officers as assigned.
4. Responds to, investigates, and composes detailed and accurate reports regarding a wide variety of incidents including, but not limited to, property and persons crimes, minor to fatal injuries and traffic collisions.
5. Responds to intrusions, hold-up, panic, and fire alarms.
6. Performs the "Cash Run" and “Lost and Found” duties as assigned, which involves retrieving daily deposits from Company facilities and transporting the deposits to designated location(s), and the processing of Lost and Found items pursuant to DNC and NPS Policies and Procedures.
7. Opens units after hours as instructed.
8. Assists the National Park Service with medical responses, traffic management, or other duties as directed.
9. Monitors condition of fire apparatus in all units.
10. Secures designated facilities, facilities found unsecured, or property found unsecured.
11. Attends and testifies at legal meetings, court proceedings and disciplinary meetings as required.
12. May work any shift, including nights.
13. Provides security for special functions.

Security Officer III (partial job description)
In addition to performing the duties of a Security Office II, the Security Officer III has the primary responsibility to perform the following:

1. Supervises as needed.
2. Conducts security, fire, and safety related training and classes to other associates.
3. Utilizes surveillance and tips to generate cases. 

Security Officer IV (partial job description)
In addition to performing the duties of a Security Office III, the Security Officer IV has the primary responsibility to perform the following:

1. May suspend associates due to specific violations against the Company.
